Black Honey and Orgasm: Women Prefer Lipsticks with Food and Sex Names

One of my favorite OPI nail colors is “I’m not really a waitress” — and I really loved it when I was waiting tables (ironic). A new study shows it’s not just the color of the cosmetic product we’re drawn to — but the name.

University of Oregon Professor Debra Merskin studied 1,722 lipstick names from 52 national brands and found women gravitate toward food and sex-themed named lipsticks.

Category names by popularity:

  • Food: 24%
  • Color: 20%
  • Sex and Romance: 10%
  • Elements and Minerals: 9%
  • Emotions and Characteristics: 8%
  • Other: 8%
  • People and Names: 5%
  • Flowers: 5%
  • Places: 4%
  • Objects: 3%
  • Darkside: 2%
  • Arts and Media: 1%
  • Birds and Animals: 1%
  • Times and Seasons: <1%

If you are choosing your lipstick shade based on its actual color — go with red: A study in France found that red lipstick boosted female waitresses’ tips from male customers.
